My CST 300 Blog I remember the experience of being stuck with a decision that alter ones life. From Hartnell, I transterred to Calpoly San Luis Obispo to major in computer science. I was pretty excited that time until the bubble burst and my father's struggle with cancer changed my perspective. Now I am in a school that makes me proud. I just hope that one day, I can return this establishment a favor. Someday. The founder of Hanagu design would make San Jose State University proud. I am sure that aside from himself and family, he had helped a lot of people by providing services, both pro bono and paid, and internships for CSUMB students. I admire the guy. Coming from Calpoly, where I know is a place to absorb technical lessons, he graduated from San Jose State University with a business related degree. He talked about how he used what he learned from school regarding people management and entrepeneurial skills in creating his own destiny. Although he did not brag about the material things one can acquire from having a high paying job in the Graphic Design industry, he got me hooked on his attitude towards work and family life. He said that he is satisfied with a small company and would not give up his family time to gain more. Great Guy. Daryl has a degree in Public Relation. He had an opportunity to work with various Graphic Design tools: Painter --> Correl. His talk was entitiled "What you do not learn from College" He mentioned how much his public relation skils affect his success story. He define public relation as the way one presents himself/herself. He admits that awareness of ones looks or looking your best can be superficial but important to ones career. He advises students to first of all, have a goal, and then be active in reaching those goals. Being active may include being involve in clubs, groups or student bodies related to ones career. He mentioned some of the products his company creates. They are POSER, SHADE, MANGA and others. It is nice to hear what companies develop because somewhere down the line, I knwo that I would be working with this tools, assuming that my company would provide them. He also talks about how one can be a freelance. He showed some of his work and some sites that he checks out to get updates in the career he chose. These site are: renderosity.com, devian-art.com, creativegroup.com, cgsociety and others. Despite all these details, what really got stuck in my mind is "reach compromise" attitude. I know that no matter how much talent you have, you need to be realistic that you are unique and others experience things way different than you. This is why even experts do some usability testings. I am hopefully graduating this semester. My Major Learning outcomes that I found exciting is the capstone part. This is one's chance to shine prior to graduation. This can be either exciting or scary. Each task that I did were saved even if they are things that were written down on tissue paper. For two semesters, a student can isolate a faculty from their busy lives and benefit from the one on one guidance and instructions they will provide. I had the chance to do this with Dr. Eric Tao. Independence and the ability to resist procastination is practiced on this MLO. The capstone project can be simple or can be as magnificant as a revolution. However, the essence of this MLO is for students to learn project management, communication skills, technical skills and practicality. This also adds up to a portfolio you can highlight even after you graduate. Dr. Bude Su is currently teaching classes at CSUMB. She particularly teachers CST 201 and will be teaching some Instructional Technology based courses. Her origin is China but closer to Mongolia. Her academic background includes B.S. in Computer Science. In her presentation, I learned a great deal about Instrucional Technology. She defined it as a systematic design process and is part of Instructional Technology. She define Instructional Technology as theory and practices for learning. She mentions that this mostly include Media and Performance learning for companies and its different entities: development, utility, management, evaluation and design. I learned much about her presentation and I could relate to it since I am currently working for a company doing small instructional design projects. Next, Dr. Eric Tao talked about the importance of study groups and acquiring the right discipline necessary to be successful. He did this effectively using an analogy of how much you can maximize the space of a jar to occupy rocks of different sizes ( rocks, small rocks and sands ). In the end, I know how important it is because in the real world, there are tasks that can be done in hours and those that can be done in months. We just have to prioritize. The first graduate is now working for the Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System. She is excited about a future project where she will be creating IT entities such as the Doctors on Duty Portal and physicians portal. She talks about how big of a budget her company has to accomodate her need to learn new stuff. The company will benefit from her growth, anyways. She listed some of the programs that she uses in her work. Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Acrobat and others. She also emphasize on Project management, Flow through and other communication skills necessary to be effective. The next graduate is a typical soft-spoken and laid back guy who seems to enjoy his work. He is working as a Junior Designer for a local design firm. The company works with local agricultural businesses/companies. They do high end designs. He talks about how his capstone project pave way to what he is doing at his work now. The third graduate is someone I had classes with. She is not currently working for CSUMB. Having to work with her in one of my group project is flattering, knowing what she is doing now. She emphasize in learning new things after school. She mentions she is underpaid but I know that she is enjoying her job. In the end, Eric and the 3 graduates recommend that we visit websites to keep our skills updated. Websites like commarts.com were mentioned. Two speakers we had today were faculty members that I already had class with. I never mentioned passing them. I am currently in Bobbi's CST 361s class, and yes this is my last semester. Do not ask me why because I forgot about the slacker who I used to know. Service Learning is fun and rewarding. It is one of the courses that you will either hate or love. Some students even find is meaningless. Too bad; it is required. It is not that bad. You spent 30 hours helping people learn technology. You are not to save the world but you contribute to lessening the digital divide. You will be surprise; it will change you, too. Bobbi also inspired me to improve my design skills. Along with Trudy Carl's portfolio that inspired me to study css, Bobbi inspires me to use typology and lay out designs to create something technical, yet beautiful. I like the animation that Pat Watson's students did for the upcoming library. I don’t need to talk about the demand, competitiveness and reward of being involved in the animation field. It is our new world. Animation applied to movies, military training, medicine and others. What intrigues me is the programming part of animation. I want to learn animation scripting. I also want to create video games. Wanting something does not mean I need to change my major. I will just settle with telling people that “I went to school what that 3d animator!” I was not around when Eric talked about Project Management because I had to do a presentation for a project that I just finished from work. Eric let me leave early because he knew that I know enough about project management. Eric was my capstone advisor for my Fast Online Ordering System. He is also our advisor for the Open System Laboratory projects we are currently doing. I do not proclaim that I know a lot about it, but I had exposure to project management and had experience using Gantt charts, collaborating with various departments and others. Job Searching? Follow your heart and prepare for it. Time management - "if only I would have enough time to manage" "I guess I just have to create time." One thing I learned about the lectures, the presentation and the talks about time management is its importance. I know this because time management is my weakness. Yes, I do have written plans but in reality, each task varies in time completion. But having a way to describe time allocation means you can adjust it. It is like writing checks, "mental calculation will ruin you." Dr. Bude Su. She currently teaches CST 201 and some instructional technology courses. She has an undergraduate in computer science. I learned how important instructional design and technology is. I learned that knowing that learning is mostly psychological, too and that studying students’ behavior towards learning materials can improve teaching effectiveness. The next talker was Kathleen Dorsey, a visual basic expert applied to data processing from ecology-based projects. I find her background fascinating. I would like to be able to do something that I really care about and use technology for enhancement. I believe that multitasking is a skill that should be practiced. As I read through the web site (http://www.adprima.com/studyout.htm), Among the items, my strengths would be Reading; Preparing an Outline and Writing the Paper. I like the reading part and brainstorming. I do like writing, too. My weakness would be finishing what I started, reviewing and Using Correct Punctuation and Grammar. But now that I am aware of how to do them right. I would practice. I'll try to fit them in my study time... Check out my weekly schedule: ![]() I like the ILP of Trudy Carl. Her ILP had been an inspiration for me to use Cascading Style Sheets. Before viewing her ILP, I ahd been using Frames to isolate content from navigation. Her projects also shows what the classes are all about and what she got out of those classes. It is an ILP worth being featured at the ITCD site. It is also amazing seeing how her work progresses as she takes more classes. The other ILP I looked at is one of Vanessa Tigno's. She is my younger sister's friend and now working for DMDC. Her portfolio's simplicity serves its purpose. Her projects showcase her skills. The only thing that I did not like about the portfolio are the broken links. I am sure that she probably overlooked some links and forgot to make relative links as opposed to links to the home server, which we lose after we graduate. I hope that my ILP Portfolio will combine both the effective features of each ILP I discussed above. Hope to have it up soon. My path is to graduate with a TMAC degree emphasizing in Programming and Administration. In doing so I want to learn the necessary skills and habits, acquire enduring lessons that will help me in the future and learn much about working with my peers and faculties. I want to integrate design skills and programming skills in order to work on projects that explores new applications that will benefit the general users and not just consumers. I want to learn much about programming without mastering one programming language but learning how to move along different languages. I want to take law after getting my undergrad. However, I want to get a feel of working in the computer industry and learn about the trade. As, an employee, I will observe ethical issues that are related to the work I am doing and might someday be issues I would want to deal with if i become a lawyer. Another pathway I might take is getting a masters in Software Engineering or Management of Information Science. With further studies of the world of computing, I might plan to work on cutting edge research or be involve in teaching. Things that are unexplored and possible to me are anything that we can imagine other than what Doug Engelbert's world. I want to surf the net using my walkman with voice activated input and sreamin audio output. This is possible by combining technologies that we are developing now. With faster processing, improved voice imprinting algorithms and human effort, we can do this.. maybe not as a capstone, yet. These are paths I want to take and I believe I am in the right school. |
